ARIPO

African Regional Intellectual Property Organization (ARIPO) is an inter-governmental organization that facilitates cooperation among its member states in intellectual property matters, with the objective of pooling financial and human resources, and seeking technological advancement for economic, social, technological, scientific and industrial development.

The organization has 19 member states namely Botswana, Gambia, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Rwanda, São Tomé and Príncipe, Somalia, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Currently, 10 countries can be designated for trademark registration and 18 for patents, utility models and industrial designs.

  • Deed of Assignment or other instrument of title in English or with verified English translation

  • License Agreement in English or with verified English translation

Recordal of Change of Name or Address

  • Power of Attorney, simply signed
  • Certificate of Change of Name/Address, in English or with verified English translation

Filing Requirements

Patents of Invention (Non-PCT):

  • Power of Attorney, simply signed (can be filed within two months)
  • Specification, claims and abstract in English (required on the filing date)
  • Formal drawings, if applicable (required on the day of filing)
  • International Patent Classification (can be filed later)
  • Assignment of Invention (can be filed later)
  • Priority document (if claimed) with verified English translation (can be filed within 3 months)

National Phase PCT applications:

  • Power of Attorney, simply signed (can be filed within two months)
  • Specification, claims and abstract in English (required on the filing date)
  • Formal drawings, if applicable (required on the filing date)
  • International Patent Classification (required on the filing date)
  • Copy of PCT International Publication (required on the filing date)
  • Copy of International Search Report (can be filed on a later date)
  • Copy of International Preliminary Examination Report (can be filed on a later date)

Filing Requirements

  • Drawings or photographs of design (required on the filing date)
  • Description/statement of novelty (required on the filing date)
  • Priority Document, if claimed (can be filed within three months from filing date)
  • Verified Translation of Priority Document if not in English (can be filed within three months from filing date)
  • Deed of Assignment (can be filed within three months from filing date)
  • Details of International Classification (can be filed within three months from filing date)

Assignment

  • Power of attorney signed by the assignee.
  • Copy of deed of assignment signed by the assignor and assignee.

Change of Name and/or Address

  • Power of attorney reflecting the new name or address simply signed.
  • Certified copy of document or the extract from the commercial register reflecting the change.

License/Registered User

  • Power of attorney signed by the licensee.
  • Copy of license agreement signed by both parties.
